24 January 2018
Today, January 24, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko and the Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov visited the Passenger Port of Saint Petersburg.
The field meeting was held to discuss a number of important issues in the development of cruise and ferry tourism in the Baltic Sea basin, including the project to create a joint regional cruise operator with the aim of reviving cruise shipping in the Baltic region.
Georgy Poltavchenko noted the advantages that Saint Petersburg has as one of the world’s popular tourist destinations and said that the city on the Neva River annually welcomes about half a million cruise passengers and most of them would not choose a trip around the Baltic Sea unless it included Saint Petersburg. Every year the number of guests, who arrived in the northern capital of Russia via water, was rapidly increasing.
The Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov supported the Saint Petersburg initiative and said that new Pionersky port would be built in the Kaliningrad Region by 2020 and it would be one of the stopover points on the itinerary of passenger cruise ships to be created in the first stage of the development of the regional ship company.
Following the meeting, it was decided that an agreement between Saint Petersburg and Kaliningrad should be signed, which would be aimed at developing shipping in the Baltic region. The parties also negotiated the timelines and prospects for the implementation of joint projects, outlined the nearest cooperative initiatives and agreed on the joint participation in events aimed at developing the tourist potential of Russian cities and regions. Meeting participants expressed confidence that the co-joint work would further increase the interest of tourists in the Baltic region.
At the business meeting, the leadership of Passenger Port of St. Petersburg Marine Facade PLC, represented by Andrey Mushkarev, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Vadim Kashirin, the Port’s Director General, took the guests on a tour around the Passenger Port and noted its history, infrastructure and highlighted the Port’s promising investment projects.
