The Passenger Port of Saint Petersburg Participating in the Project of Creating the Museum of the History of Northern Convoys

04 July 2019

PP of SPb MF, PLC, joined the board of trustees and supports the Foundation for the Preservation of Historical Memory “International Center for Northern Convoys” to participate in the project to create the world’s largest Memorial Museum of the History of the Northern Convoys.

The history of the Northern Convoys is a heroic page in the annals of World War II, a unique example of military and technical maritime cooperation between the anti-Hitler coalition countries. The supply of weapons, equipment, and materials played an important role in the initial stage of the war, contributed to the accelerated restoration of Soviet Army fighting efficiency, and saved the lives of many soldiers and officers.
The start of the project of creating the Memorial Museum of the History of Northern Convoys can be considered the year of 2014 when the monument “In Memory of the Sailors of the Polar Convoys of 1941-1945” was erected near the College of the State University of the Sea and River Fleet named after Admiral S.O. Makarov. The monument location was not chosen by accident: the graduates of “Makarovka” were directly involved in the delivery of goods from the UK and the USA to the USSR. Among them, there were sailors of transport ships, naval sailors of surface ships and submarines of the Northern Fleet. It is planned that the future museum will consist of both classic exhibitions including artifacts, documents, photographs, and about 200 various models and mock-ups, and a sophisticated, unparalleled interactive simulation of the combat situation of a convoy ship. The combination of a classic museum and a modern interactive way of presenting materials will make the museum interesting not only to the older generation but also to youth.
The exposition hall of the Polar Convoys can now be seen in the College of the State University of the Sea and River Fleet named after Admiral S.O. Makarov that stores museum exhibits donated by relatives of the Northern Convoys’ participants. Later, the exhibition will be extended and will turn into the Museum of the History of the Northern convoys – the world’s largest museum in this area, whereas an off-site exhibition will be arranged in the Passenger Port’s terminals.
